TORCHWOOD is a spin-off series of the successful sci-fi show Doctor Who. The series was announced in October 2005 by BBC Wales and is currently due to air in October 2006.

This is the second televised spin-off from Doctor Who. The first was K9 & Company in 1981 which only got as far as a pilot episode being broadcast.

Torchwood stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness who appeared in the 2005 series of Doctor Who alongside Chrisopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. The series deals with how Captain Jack returns to Earth and works with a reformed Torchwood.

Other cast members include Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Belongings) playing Gwen Cooper, Burn Gorman (Bleak House) and Naoko Mori (Doctor Who, Absolutely Fabulous).

The BBC Press release states - " Torchwood follows the adventures of a team of investigators as they use alien technology to solve crimes, both alien and human. This new British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home."

Writers on the series include Russell T Davies, Chris Chibnall (Born and Bred, Life On Mars), PJ Hammond (Sapphire & Steel), Toby Whithouse (Doctor Who), Helen Raynor (Doctor Who script editor) along with other writers planned for Season 2 including Noel Clarke who played Mickey Smith in Doctor Who and wrote and starred in film Kidulthood.
