Torchwood set for 'Big Bang' day

09 Aug 2008 by Simon

A special radio episode of sci-fi drama Torchwood is to be broadcast as part of BBC Radio 4's Big Bang day.

The station will broadcast from the European nuclear research facility in Geneva on 10 September where scientists are to recreate the Big Bang aftermath.

Presenter Andrew Marr will report on the day's events for Radio 4 which has exclusive access to the site.

The episode of Torchwood will be set inside the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The show's star John Barrowman will also appear in discussion with CERN physicist Brian Cox.

Cox, a former member of chart-topping band D:Ream, will also talk to Alan Alda, Eddie Izzard and comic actor Ben Miller - all of whom are particle physics enthusiasts.

The moment just after the Big Bang will be recreated by the fastest atom smasher in the world by scientists at CERN.

They are hoping it will give them an insight into the origins of the universe and its composition.

The experiment will be launched live on the Today programme.

In a statement, Andrew Marr said: "This will be one of the greatest scientific experiments, as well as the most expensive, ever conducted on Earth, which - fingers crossed - will reveal truths about existence guessed at but never demonstrated.

"The eyes of the thinking world will be watching CERN, which is why it will be such a privilege to report there for Radio 4's special day."

Shorter Third series of Torchwood

16 Jun 2008 by Simon

Torchwood's executive producer Julie Gardner has confirmed rumours that the show will move to BBC1 with a much shorter season.

According to the official Torchwood Magazine, the third season of the Doctor Who spinoff will feature one continuous story and last just five episodes, including at least one penned by Russell T. Davies.

Gardner told the publication: "As you know, plans for a third series have been underway for a long time, and we now have a new producer and a new director in place, as well as brand new scripts all ready to go. It's the longest and most ambitious story we have ever made, so be prepared for some shocks and surprises!"

She added: "Life at Torchwood is never quiet or easy and the whole of Captain Jack's world
is about to be turned upside down!"

The new series will begin filming in August for transmission in early 2009.

Davies hails Captain Jack's Sexuality

16 Jun 2008 by Simon

Russell T. Davies has hailed the importance of bisexual character Captain Jack Harkness on primetime British television.

The Doctor Who showrunner told the New York Times that the presentation of Captain Jack, first seen in 2005 story 'The Empty Child', opposes the usual depiction of bisexuality on television.

"I thought: 'It’s time you introduce bisexuals properly into mainstream television,'" he said. "The most boring drama would be - 'Oh, I'm bisexual, oh my bleeding heart' nighttime drama. Tedious, dull. But if you say it’s a bisexual space pirate swaggering in with guns and attitude and cheek and humour into primetime family viewing - that was enormously attractive to me."

Davies added: "I often get asked to write dramas or films about a man coming out of the closet to his wife, or a man coming out of the closet to his children, or a man who's beaten up because he’s secretly gay. I always refuse if it's a negative take on homosexuality - if the only aspect being portrayed is the trouble, the tears and the angst."

There are strong rumours that Captain Jack, last seen in spinoff show Torchwood, will return to Doctor Who for the finale of the current fourth season.
